February Flora…
Leaves of many trees are showing signs of new spring flush already. The azaleas are starting to bloom, the Flatwoods Plums are blooming by the beginning of the month. Other early-month bloomers include Redbud, Magnolia Soulangiana, Camellias, Rosemary, Carolina Yellow Jasmine…
February Fauna…
February mornings begin early. At dawn, the resident Sand Hill Cranes call each day throughout the pond and in the evening are heard at sunset. The owls and Hawks are pretty active this month. Deer are seen often crossing the roads in the evening and turkey ramble into the woods. Much mole and squirrel activity, and mosquitos, and gnats are numerous.
February Celestial Observations…
February’s Moon is traditionally called the Snow Moon because usually, the heaviest snows fall in February. Thursday, February 15 at 4:05 p.m. EST – New Moon, Partial Solar Eclipse. On the mornings of February 7 and 8, the waning last quarter moon will appear about 7 degrees above and beside Jupiter respectively. Saturn will be easily observable in the southeastern pre-dawn sky during February, appearing as a yellowish, visual magnitude 0.5 object among the stars of Sagittarius.
